Meet Eric Braverman, MD
In the year 1975, I had my first job at the Princeton Brain Bio-Center. I was assigned the important task of helping Dr. Carl Phiffer to write a book, “Zinc and Other micro-Nutrients”. When I wrote this book, it was considered that Lead was safe at 80 parts per million, and we argued that a safe level was zero. Subsequently, every five years or so, the environmental protection agency lowered this limit to 60, then 40, then 20, then 10, and some groups even lowered it down to zero for children. At that time, we discovered the important role for zinc, where a hundred enzymes were involved. Iron was involved with only eight enzymes and received far more attention. I was told by the Dean at Harvard Medical School that my work on nutrition was completely meaningless and obsolete, and unimportant for medicine. The importance for micro-nutrients in our soil and the impact on behavior is not well known. The importance of magnesium in heart disease, the long term toxic effects of aluminum, lead, cadmium, and mercury on the brain, were all identified in my first book. Selenium is an anti-cancer agent.
While working at the Princeton Brain Bio-Center in the 1980′s I wrote my first book on amino acids, which has now gone through three editions. I was first to identify the importance of carnitine and arginine as essential amino acids for kidney disease; toxic amino acids that are widely recognized in stroke; the use of proline to identify bone breakdown in urine; the benefits of taurine which are now modified and are used in alcoholism, the benefits of N-Acetyl-Cysteine which has been used in radiation poison which I spoke about a Los Alamos National Lab and was used in emergency rooms, the importance of homocysteine as a predictor of heart disease which was written about before any doctor even knew about homocysteine, and the use of any variety of amino acids as augmenters of mood such as phenylalanine and tyrosine and the use of tryptophan for sleep. Carnitine has been used for protection against side effects from Depakote as well as other health benefits.
As a result of this training, I have been able to take the message even further with subsequent books on “Male Sexual Health”, and the “Edge Effect” where I simplify brain chemistry into four core neurotransmitters dopamine/catecholamine providing energy, gaba/and stability, acetylcholine and cognition, and serotonin and sleep and the endorphin (our pain relieving system). Subsequently, I discovered that the brain is the most important organ and it impacted every illness. There is no illness that the brain does not have an impact and help get you better. The power of the brain and mind is so fantastic.
Finally in “Younger You”, we learned that you are only as young as your oldest part and that our current physical exam is out dated and hasn’t been updated in over a hundred years and that the ultrasound based physical is superior. We found that you could go through each body part and assign an age. The reason that people that feel good still died is due to the fact that they have a body part that had silent disease.
Finally we have new breakthroughs with leptins and brain chemistry that obesity is an addictive disorder, which was published in “Younger Thinner You”. The next book that will be published in 2010 called “Younger Sexier You”, which will describe how you can sustain a fuller sex life into your second century.
